I'm 13, and in 8th grade. I believe in Santa Clause. My parents tell me he's real, and my friends say he's not. I don't get it. Is he real or not?

I won't lie. He is, sadly, not real anymore.

BUT, there was a person named Saint Nicholas who was pretty much the original Santa. He would go out during the night and slip toys and presents into the young children's shoes as they were sleeping on Christmas night. The little kiddies would wake up in the morning to find a little present stowed away in their shoe. :)

Now, a few years back my parents decided to tell me he wasn't real. I flipped. I locked myself in my room and drew pictures of him and the Easter bunny and taped them to my wall. I refused to beleive it. But now, I am older. (same as you!) I realised a few things:

a. He's not real, but it is oh so fun to beleive he is.
b. My parents were stupid to tell a 10 yr old that.
c. I have a perfect explaination as to how he IS real.

You see, our parents put out the presents and scarf down the cookies at midnight. Therefore, poor Santa has nothing to do. He just sits in the noth pole and sighs, Mrs. Claus by his side. Same with the other holidays like that. Because I parents do the work, they have nothing to do. So they have given up and all live together, watching the children be happy and beleive in them. :)

If you are Catholic then it goes a little soemthing like this..(I'm not, so this story is going to leave out the details.)

He is a Catholic St.
St. Nickolas AKA Santa Claus is Spanish. I have no clue why we all use his Spanish name he came from Turkey!

He went around to all the poor childrens houses in his town every year down the chimney, (I am acually not sure if that was made up like the north pole and elves...)

The truth is he WAS real, but he died. Everything about his sleigh, the elves and the north pole are lies. If you're Catholic you hang your stocking on St. Nick day, decmber 6th, and not the eve of Christmas.

He is in heaven watching all the parents carry on his duties. Honoring his good deeds...

He never wore a red coat. He never flew a sliegh, he never owned rain deer. He had NOTHING to do with the north pole or enslaving elves or had anything to do with the name Criss Cringle, wat dope made that up. Watch the vid, it explains it TEN times better than me!

Here is the story who Santa is based off of.

Don't be sad. Just honor the good saint by opening your stocking each year!

This question was answered beautifully in 1897. I am going to copy and paste the article that appeared in a newspaper in answer to a young girl who asked the same quesiton.

"DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old.
"Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
"Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.'
"Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

"VIRGINIA O'HANLON.
"115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET."

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

I gave you this article because goodness knows, I couldn't have said it better myself.

Merry Christmas!

I'll tell you the truth, just like I told my own kids.
They believed and then all their friends said no.
Santa Claus represents the spirit of giving. So Santa is real, it is a feeling that everyone likes.
It's just that people have used Santa as a symbol.
So if you don't believe in Santa, you don't believe in giving, and therefore, don't get any gifts.
Merry Christmas

Santa is an old God of the Winter Solstice or of The forest relating to Shamanic or other pagan tradition.

belief has evolved over the centuries, and our image of him changed

Another God to believe in --- No wonder he can stop time
