Go to a local pet store and buy "Nature's Miracle". It's a natural enzyme that will remove any orders from any surface. I've never had it fail me yet!

First of all, if the carpet is anything but white, do not use hydrogen peroxide on it...it will change the color!

Get a steam cleaner ready. Mix one quart of vinegar in one gallon of very hot water. Cup by cup pour mixture directly on stain. I know this sounds bad for the carpet, but if it's in the corner, the urine has gotten into the woodwork and floor as well as the carpet. Use the steam cleaner to vacuum up the water after a minute or two. Repeat this until the vinegar mixture is gone. Finally, use the vacuum to suck up the mixture til you're not getting any thing up any more.
No need to rinse, there's no chemical left to harm children. You will smell the vinegar until the wood and carpet dry completely. After that, blissfully nothing!
I always put a clean bath towel on all damp carpets so that the damp areas don't get dirty during the drying process.

The easiest way to treat your carpet is to purchase some Nature's Miracle in a pet store and saturate the spot with the product. The product will do the work for you. Nature's Miracle works by using enzymes, so while it dries the enzymes will eliminate the odor.
You really need to make sure the spot is saturated with the product though, because the urin most likely penetrated the padding below the carpet.

. If the cat has recently urinated on the carpet, first absorb as much of the cat urine as possible using paper towels or an old towel. Place clean paper towels over the cat urine area and tread on them so as to absorb as much of the urine as possible. Repeat with dry towels until no more moisture can be absorbed.

If the cat urine has dried and you are not sure where the soiled area is you can use a black light (pictured above) to detect it. In a darkened room the black light will pick up urine and other stains. Hand held black lights can be purchased for between $15 to $25

2. Next, wet the area with a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water. Make sure you use enough of the solution to penetrate the fibres deep down. Allow it to dry. You can assist drying by blotting with paper towels as described above. A fan can also be used to assist drying. If you own a wet and dry vacuum extractor use that to remove excess moisture.
The acidity of the vinegar will neutralize the ammonia in the cat urine.

3. When it's dry, apply a liberal amount of baking soda over the affected area and drizzle it with a quarter of a cup of hydrogen peroxide mixed with a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent. Work it in with a scrubbing brush or your fingers (be sure to wear rubber gloves) to dissolve the baking soda and work it down into the carpet. Allow it to dry. Then vacuum.

The vinegar will neutralize the ammonia and hydrogen peroxide is a powerful oxidizer capable of killing bacteria which cause the urine smells. Baking soda is a well known deodorizer which absorbs odors. Sprinkle it on your carpet monthly then vacuum up to keep your carpet smelling fresh all the time.

Important. Never use ammonia or ammonia-based products on the carpet. One of the ingredients of urine is ammonia and your cat may well be encouraged to re-offend in the same area if it detects the smell of ammonia. Many household cleaner cleaners contain ammonia so be sure to read the label.

There are a couple of really good enzyme-based products that we used to remove cat odors from fabrics in our house. The one I like best is called "Anti-Icky-Poo" - stupid name, I know, but a very very useful product.

You dilute it, and then spray it on the area. It doesn't mask the smell - it actually removes it. The bacteria in the product eat it or something. You don't need to keep cleaning spot. One (or perhaps two) applications should take care of things.

We've had a lot of success with it. I've put a link to their web site below, but we bought our stuff at a local pet shop.
