My opinion: Punk never dies... Only change.... But when I say "Change" I want to refer to groups like bad religion, not to the posers of simple plan or avril lavigne...

No punk is not dead.. It is very ignorant of you to say it and also little rude.

There are kids in little corners of the world who are trying to keep it alive. As long as there will be kids from broken homes or kids who know what the real world is about punk will be alive.

Punk was a culture started to rebel against boredom and against the authority. Punk was something that would never stay the same. Otherwise it would be the exact thing it was rebelling against - boredom.
Joe Strummer -"You know, it gets boring after a while. We play the same old clubs, same old faces in the crowd. We wanna do something different and big you know"
Thats what he said before the recording of London Calling, after which The Clash would become one of the biggest bands in the world.

You cant call bands like Green Day less punk.. Green Day are brats from the suburbs who were in a punk scene. Green Day's music is much like Ramones(if you consider Ramones punk so is green day).. And remember punk is hardly about the music.
They were 3 main waves of punk
The Original- The Pistols/Damned/Clash/Ramones/Germs
Hardcore-Dead Kennedys/Minor Threat/Black Flag
Bratty Invasion of punk-NoFX/Green Day/ Blink 182.

Bands like green day played punk in a time where punk was not even close to popular.. they saved PUNK.
After the hardcore scene, punk was starting to die out..
No new kids were getting into punk,Therefore no new bands were starting, the small number of bands meant, no new clubs were opening.. Punk was slowly starting to die out.
Green Day played punk in a time where it was dying and they only played because they were dedicated to what they did, they had no intentions of getting all big .. and when they went all big people started criticising them for it and failed to see the point how green day revived the culture..

Punk is also becoming more of a trend now.. Its either about who looks more like Avril lavigne or even the hardcore punks who only care about whos got the most studs or the best mohawk.. And YOU are not making it any better by following the typical look.. and why the hell do you care what other people think about you?? I thought you were a true punk.. Punks dont care if people know them or what they think of them-thats a true real punk ideal..

I hope you get the points im trying to get across.( i know its kidna long:P )

But cheerio!

Punk sure has changed greatly....now it's all about the strange hair and the stratigicly ripped up jeans, with the well placed stains, catchy riffs, with no reall meaning to them...now a days, peopel think punk is Simple Plan and Avril, which is sad..i wasn't even fortuante to be alive back when punk started, but thats the kind i listen to, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Dead kennedys, The Ramones....now, punk music is absolutley dire in america....
Maybe it should die....and then come back to life and not be full of all theese horrible bands.

Bad Religion is old school nowadays. Not ancient like the Pistols though.

Anyway, I think it changes, but I think in that change some of it dies. I don't think punk is just a style of music, I think it was more of a style of life. As punk becomes more and more accepted, is it really punk? Is it rebellion and living outside society if it's accepted? And don't get me started on Christian punk!!
There are new faces with old school punk values, which I enjoy. Not as many as there are who just pose 'cause they like the nickname. I don't believe punk is dead, but it definately is past it's peak.

Punk was always about the attitude behind the music, not always about the music itself. There are still bands out there that are real - like Bad Religion, as you mentioned. I think Rise Against can be classified as a true punk band.

But it's sad to see all of the newer bands that call themselves "punk" but don't have any influences from that genre.

hello!

as a style of music, punk will never ever die....
but as a style of clothing, it's getting every day more populer, even in fashion shows appears....that makes me sick 'cause i do like punk musick and clothing, and also the hairstyle, but now it's available in every shop:: thaks to (i think) avril lavigne, my chemikal, simple plan and all that sh*t...

long live the old school punk!

Of course it is dead. Come on!
Check out a little funny satire on the subject here: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/38773

Bad Religion sounds just as much like pop crap as any of those silly MTV bands you seem to hate. What's different about them? They are both non-threatening.

Look up Marcuse's negation theories and apply them to punk rock.
Besides, it's always been a diversion for rich kids and always will be...who else can afford the expensive punk uniform? Punk was dead on arrival. Not to say that all of the old bands stink or anything, but for the most part it is just a fashion show and always was.

Punk has not died. Its just waiting while they write new songs so that they can do a comeback like every other style of music that has faded away two or three decades after it was born.
