Are they quieter? thats my main concern.

1 they are quieter.. 2 there are fewer bearing to go bad, only the bearing in the motor for a direct drive as to the motor and blower shaft bearings in belt drive blowers...3 most belt drive motors were split phase which have more parts to go bad inside the motor than direct drive motors.... 4 no belts or pulleys to wear out or need replaced...5 easier to maintain a direct drive blower...

I think the old blowers were better. They were more reliable, didn't turn as many rpms and ran much quieter.

Direct drive blowers are cheaper and more efficient at moving air.

Quieter and the belt won't wear out.

With direct drive, you have less moving parts, and no belts to worry about breaking.
