The imposition of a two-party system by installing the parties as near-branches of government is an atrocious corruption of the U.S. government. I am heartily in favor of a multi-party system, and I look beyond the two major parties for alternatives in almost every election. I have voted for candidates from several other parties, including John Anderson for President in 1980.
However, at the moment, most of the high-profile candidates being run by "third parties" are horribly bad jokes. Rather than represent alternate views, they simply form a gang of "class clowns" who simply want the attention of being on the ballot, and are willing to spout nonsense to get there.
Unfortunately, most people who are really capable of handling elected positions and willing to work at it have tied themselves to one of the two main parties, because that's the best way to accomplish anything. As long as the alternatives remain on the lunatic fringe, that's likely to continue to be the case.
The two best prospects for a serious third party in the U.S. are:
(1) the Greens (because they are willing to work from the bottom levels up, and therefore are capable of getting elected and doing real work instead of just bidding for attention); or
(2) a split in the Republican Party, probably putting the classical-liberal limited-government group on one side and the religious-right, new-Tory group on the other. But I expect that second group would wither away if left on its own.

Interesting. Apparently you haven't been paying attention. First, jobs provide you with income. Try exercising your freedom on a heating grate for a while. There's freedom for you. As to pillaging the Earth, please show me where. and if you don't like it, please stop eating, driving and turn off all the lights in your house. Experience that for a while and get back to us. Slaughtering the innocent? Again, please show me where. Last I checked we were spreading freedom and democracy to people who have never, ever had it. I'd think you'd be for freedom, but I guess freedom is only fit for Americans, huh?
Secondly, and speaking of freedom, here's just a few of the liberties that Democrats have been trying to eliminate or suppress for years:
1. Right to life. There's a biggie for you!
2. Right to bear arms.
3. Freedom OF religion.
4. Freedom of speech.
Now, tell me which freedoms the Republicans have tried to take away from you? You're barking at the wrong squirrel there Moonbeam.

I want a fiscally conservative party. Neither one is. The Democrats take away my liberty by taxing the daylights out of me (Upstate NY where it's all Democrats), regulating how I do business, and basically weakening our economy.
The large State government is killing our basic freedoms. You can talk the rhetoric, but when they take your money and jobs away they take your freedom. They love more programs for the poor, and could care less about business leaving the state, not because they care, but it keeps them in power. It works.

Because it's the best system we have. The two-party system is somewhat constitutional, so we must follow it. We just have to find different leaders and change course of our country. Therefore by having less government involvement in our lives (I.E. Social Security, Socialized Healthcare, Taxes, etc.)
