I usually just add them, and if they have a problem with that, you can always remove them. It can't hurt to send them an email letting them know, telling them you wanted to add them because you like their Q and A, or whatever.

Contacting them how? By phone, you should ask... If by email, then probably don't have to ask since they can cehck that on their own time. Also depends on whether or not there is a significant other involved where they could get in trouble for talking to other people.

I normally do it without asking because it will avoid embarrassment form both end therefore u just add them and if they don't want to they can always decline your request.
