Tips:

1. Combine like terms.
2. Take note of their signs
3. Also note the grouping symbols. First solve the terms that are "grouped" (inside the bracket, braces .... )
4. MDAS rule

Example:-

2x + 3x = 5x
5x - x = 4x

However when the terms are different then

2x^2 + 3x = 2x^2 + 3x
You CANNOT add/subtract unlike terms. The 'x^2' and the 'x' are unlike terms.
You CAN multiply or divide unlike terms.
So in the above example because the '2x^2' is an unlike term to 3x, it can only be written as shown above.
NB
1. Remember in mathematics PRESERVE EQUALITY, whatever you do to one side of an 'equals sign' you MUST do to the other side in the 'equals sign'
2. a+ b is always written as a+ b
a - b -s always written as a - b
a x b is written as 'ab'
a divided by b is written as a/b

In this case :-

3x + 2 = x + 6
You move the terms in 'x' to the left of the equals sign not forgetting to alter the mathematical sign in front of the term being moved, and move the constant terms to the right of the equals sign again not forgetting to alter the mathematical sign in front of the term being moved.
So in the above example :-
3x + 2 = x + 6 to find the value of 'x' we have:-
3x - x = 6 - 2 add/subtract like terms
2x = 4 divide both sides by 2
2x/2 = 4/2
x = 2

Hope this helps.!!!!!

enrol on a course or ask your teacher if you're at school. www.mathsisfun.com is pretty basic too.
