Is it like they are saying "Hey, I hate you, but I had to give you something."
Or is more like they just gave up too easily and didn't try?

Hmm..."Still Bored" makes a very good point.

I would water the plant make it grow and trim it to where it would spell "I hate you too" and leave it on their front door :)

Hey, I gave my brother a Chia pet once, he loved it. Well he didn't really love it but he did get it to grow. It was the Chia head one and he grew an awesome afro. When your gift-buying strategy is "What is the one thing he doesn't have and would never buy for himself" then you basically have no choice but get a ch ch ch CHIA!

I think deep down they must hate you...maybe you don't know it, and they might not even realize it yet, but after giving someone a Chia Pet, the whole world now knows.

Unless you made a comment about how cute one was I think they gave up to easily. If you pointed one out and said "Isn't that cute" while it's not greatest gift idea it does show they listen to what you say. Maybe not your meaning though.

Sometimes I wonder what people were thinking when I received off the wall gifts from them but I try to remember it was the thought (???) that counts....I could have got nothing...

Hate does not give gifts. Undecision does though. Cheap does also. Consider those.
