It will work as long as your existing router supports 802.11b, g, or n, though the speed will vary. If you have an 802.11a router, it will not.

If your router is a 802.11g, or an 802.11n, then yes it will work. It will not work with a router which is 802.11b or an 802.11a.

802.11a is used at most businesses, so many preinstalled adapters in laptops are compatible with three specs, 802.11a-b-g and soon n will be added to those.

Please note that if the router is an 802.11n and other devices on the network are using 802.11n capable adapters, your 802.11g adapter will slow the entire network down to the speed of that protocol, which is a bit slower than the 802.11n protocol.
