Pigs have very similar physiology to humans. If the person getting the translant will die waiting for a human liver, I think it is a good option.

If it works then lets go for it. Of course, there would need to be a lot of testing before this could be allowed. We would need to make sure that there were no problems or complications with it. There would probably need to be new drugs and new treatments developed that allowed the person to accept the organ. There are plenty of pigs killed each year to allow for plenty of livers to be collected. If this worked then it could let many people live who would otherwise die. Lots of people die waiting for organ transplants.

As for religious objections, it is simple. If a person has an objection to this then that person can decline this sort of transplant. However, that does not mean that all people have to be subjected to the religion of other people. If a person has no objections to the transplant and it is a proven option then it should be available to them.

It doesn't work long-term because the liver would have such different cell markers that our immune system would destroy it. Even people who have human organs closely matched to avoid graft rejection still have to take immunosuppressants.

We do use heart valves from pigs and other animals to replace human heart valves sometimes. This is possible because the valve is basically connective tissue, which is similar among the mammals. The valves are treated before transplantation to help remove material that might cause rejection.

Nope, I don't support it. I read off of national geographic about this stuff. Personaly I feel that they may be putting the human race in danger if anything more than helping. To be giving animals human brains, even if it is a mouse, creates a threat. Were the only species on this planet with an advanced way of thinking, to bring in another would eventually end in conflict. We cant live on this planet with each other well enough. There's a small chance, even though it is slim, that the animal will escape and breed. Then we'd actually have to compete for the top of the food chain eventually.

My father passed away 2 months ago. He needed liver and couldnt find a donor who meets the specific criteria. I think if there was a pig liver, I wish he took it, and I'm muslim...I think when it is necessary it is ok , well too late!

maybe pigs are not clean, but not all of them, I mean if they will use a pig liver they will make sure he is medically accepted, then when it is inside the human, the person chose what to eat, it is not his liver!!

If it is the best solution and the patient is ok with that, I agree with the transplantation. Especially if the pig ends up as delicious pork chops, ham and ribs.

If it means a chance to prolong my life with a pig liver, I would take it.

I feel that it is proof of common descent.

It makes me wonder if someone who is against eating pork (jewish or muslim) would also be against having their life saved by a pig liver.

Oh well, one less religious person to worry about!
