Not everyone does this, but many people do. I'm not interested in solving the problem, because I have my own ways of dealing with it, I am simply interested in the reasons why some people behave this way. Call it a poll if you want, I'm just curious.

I hate to be picky, but I am specifically asking why YOU do this, if you do. This is not a "what's your biggest pet peeve about driving" poll. I specifically want to know why YOU speed up to block people trying to change lanes in front of you, if you do.

Well, for the people who have succeeded in answering correctly, it appears that most people who do this are doing it to either maintain their position ahead of everyone else, which is slightly disturbing logic because no matter where you are on the highway, there's about a half a million cars, ahead of you, or you are doing it to punish people for some real or imagined error, intentional or not, which is equally disturbing, because the common denominator among many drivers, good or bad, is that someone else is causing all the problems.

Ok,,you wanted honest answer, you got it.
To punish them for not using turn signals and sometimes for driving a foreign car.

The only time I do something like this is when I am getting ready to enter a freeway ramp. There is a long line of us who waited in the correct lane...then some guy tries to squeeze in between you and another car by crossing the double white lines...which is illegal here in Texas.

I also hate it when drive down the highway and you start seeing signs....Left Lane Closed Ahead...so as you get closer you move over into the right lane...which most people have....then way back behind you there is some guy flying up the empty left lane and thinks he has the right to now pull over the to right in front of you. WRONG....he can set there at that cone barrier and wait for an opening. My thoughts is he should have pulled over when all of us other drivers pulled over. My time is just a valuable as his.

Now if I'm on a highway and someone signals to move over into my lane...I'll let him.....I would like a courtesy wave as a 'Thank You'.

The ones I hate are the ones that drive 10-15 MPH under the speed limit until you pass them, then they have to turn it into a race and pass you back, simply because you have challenged their manhood (or womanhood).

I tend to use my cruise control most of the time when I'm on the highway, so I'm pretty much driving a steady speed all the time. I end up passing the same cars over and over again, because they have to pass me and then slow down in front of me again.

I don't speed up to intentionally block someone...

Sometimes its just that I have zoned out a little while driving, that I didn't notice that my speed had dropped back as far as it did, and only noticed it because of the oncoming car trying to pass me. So I resume to at least get back to the speed limit...

Sometimes it's just that my cruise control is very good at maintaining the set speed within +/-1mph. It's not my fault that the cars around me (including the one passing) slow down when going up a hill (so it gives the impression that I'm speeding up).

When I'm passing/overtaking, I rarely see other cars speeding up to block me from moving ahead of them. Usually it is just that I am unable to see/judge the speed of the car in front of the car that I wanted to pass, and discover that the car I'm trying to pass really wanted to be in my lane to pass the car in front of him (as he's going faster than the car in front of him, he's closing the gap (appears to be speeding up relative to the car in front of him)).

If your from Minnesota, where we are voted the worst mergers, alot of people block you from getting in just because we realize 85% of the people on the road have no clue about whats going on.

What I really hate, is when someone passes you to get in front of you, only to slow you down to turn a quarter mile later.

Im not sure but them are usely the same jerks that are going 10 under the speed limit in the fast lane (talking on the phone and reading the paper). But has soon as they see you trying to get somewhere they speed up.

that is i hate the most, when some rude person just speeds up and stops you from changing lanes, even if you got to turn at the next corner

They tend not to do that to me, probably because I have 8500k HID head lights both head and driving lights.
When ever they do, I turn the whole back end of there car or truck purple

my friend, like my husband puts it, it is called the me first syndrome and they don't care what they have to do to be first in line. it is also a major cause of road rage in the other person that gets cut off.
