Because they give off this sense of arrogance. They are often perceived to be loud and obnoxious and frankly incredibly ignorant about the rest of the world. I mean, "the world series" doesn't include any other countries. They also appear to have an obsession with weaponry and American exports always seem to be soulless and heavily commercialised. Politically, America is seen to be a naiive but powerful country that thinks it can police the world. America is the source of this compensation culture which is frankly a bloody nuisece. American morals are often absolutest and christian and yet they seem to have little care for the environment and the rest of the world. There is also an aura of complete stupidity seen by the increasingly poor education system and this has been internationally excentuated by George Bush. Also for the many people in the world who dispise capatilism, America is the pinnical of a capatilist nation.
I am aware that most of these things are crass generalisations of the reality that is the result of the actions of the few rather than the actions of the many (or so I hope). Regardless this is the view of America that is percieved by those who don't really know any better such as myself.

I am a British citizen and think that many nations dislike the Americans because the government are dictating to other countries around the world and expecting them to adapt to the same way as us westerners. However the Americans have a very sour history regarding the booting out of the native American Indians, illegally stealing their land, also the how they treated the black community as slaves. Their approach to world affairs is bombastic and dominating. Many other countries see them as been nothing but dictators in the western world.

I'm English.
I think it's to do with the arrogant way they are portrayed in the media, the gung-ho patriotism. It's also a lot to do with the politics of the country and the fact that Bush is such an idiot doesn't really help.
Then there is the fact that it's so lacking culture - and doesn't seem at all able to embrace cultures from elsewhere - Mexico is on your doorstep and there are so many Hispanic people full of culture - this should be encouraged and not dismissed and certainly not ridiculed.
There are many reasons.
I don't hate America, but I'm glad I am not American.

Because America is the pinnacle of hypocrisy.
They claim to be the "arsenal of democracy", then turn around and chuck the Universal Declaration of Human Rights out the window when it suits them. Perfect example is torture.
Article 3.
Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
Article 5.
No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
Article 8.
Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law.
Article 9.
No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.
Article 10.
Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.
Article 11.
(1) Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence.
Article 30.
Nothing in this Declaration may be interpreted as implying for any State, group or person any right to engage in any activity or to perform any act aimed at the destruction of any of the rights and freedoms set forth herein.
The United States makes a mockery of these articles on a regular basis with "advanced interrogation techniques". Nobody would really care if you just plain tortured people, but to then go and say that "They hate us because we are free" or the "arsenal of democracy" thing is total bollocks.
Oh, and it seems that you also have a history of genocide and massacres, but I'm not sure that its taught in schools. Example: The Indian wars. And then they go and make movies glorifying it. Seriously.

I am Canadian living in the US and have also lived abroad.
Americans like to easily dismiss it as jealousy, but the truth is, when a lot of Americans go overseas, they are not respectful of the language or culture. There is an unfortunate tendancy of some of them to think that everything should be like it is in America instead of embracing a different culture.
