Many writers write from the headlines. Look through some science and non-science magazines. Imagine a "what if" change in the science and how it might affect someone. Keep notes in a notebook. I have dozens of ideas that I have come up with using this. I have published several short stories and am currently working one idea up into a novel.

IMHO the best science fiction books take current science and technology to the extreme. robotics and electonics like the Kindle, I-phone Wii etc seem ripe for a great sci-fi story.

I will give you one of mine - it's on my list of things to write, but if you decide to do it, let me know.
A man submits to medical testing because he needs the money. It seems simple enough, just some tissue samples and the like, and he thinks nothing of it.
A few years later he meets a woman, falls in love and they have a relationship. It's only after all this happens that he learns she is a clone ----- a female clone of him!
It opens up a lot of scientific, medical, moral, ethical, social, and sexual questions. It would be tough to pull off, but I thought it was a good idea.

A story about a guy who finds out that the president and his cabinet are actually an evil race of reptilian aliens bent on taking over the world.....
Oh wait....I think that's really happening....Well, it hasn't been written down as sci fi yet so I would jump on that if I were you!

Maybe a story where aliens are invading earth. Although it's possible somebody's already done that before.

A cover, pages, some printing on the pages in a specific order that forms a story.
All those things, and you'd have a book.

how about a story where ppl are are given a lethal injection after they are 40 years old due to overpopulation and the lead charecters are trying to escape it ;-)
just a thought.....try to build it up
