To the best of my memory, Black Kettle's Cheyenne village was attacked in November 1864 by Colonel John M. Chivington, a former Methodist preacher, and his volunteer forces in reprisal for actions committed by other Indians in the area.

Chivington issued the order to his troops to, "Kill and scalp all, big and little; nits make lice." It did not matter to Chivington if Black Kettle and his village were peaceful or not; their mission was to kill any and all Indians found.

Black Kettle had an American flag flying over his tipi, a clear indication that he favored the American culture, but this did not stop Chivington--even after a solitary Indian approached the soldier, pleading that the village was peaceful. Soldiers instantly killed the messenger.

The engagement was at first lauded by the whites as a glorious victory, but when the facts slowly came out, a wave of revulsion against Chivington and his men spread through much of the nation. For the most part, sadly, the Sand Creek Massacre was looked upon as a needful step to subdue, conquer, or destroy the Indian.

Edit note: It wasn't Chivington that later met his fate, bragging that he could wipe out the entire Sioux Nation with only 80 of his troopers, but Captain William J. Fetterman. Red Cloud and young Crazy Horse proved him wrong.

Please excuse the gaffe.
