Since the Cowboys have a first round bye as does Green Bay who will be playing in the wildcard games the day they are off? I always thought a top seed (sp?) team played the wildcard team? I am very confused. If someone could help explain this in terms of the NFC because I know that division a little better.
Thanks

A wildcard is kind of like a last chance to get in to the playoffs. If a team has been doing rather badly the first few games of a season but then they start winning all their games, they're still in the running for the playoffs through a wildcard. For example, this year in the NFC the Eagles, Giants, Vikings, Lions, Cardinals, and the Saints are all fighting for the last chance into the playoffs. But, the problem is there are only 2 wildcard spots. The two teams in the division with a record in 5th and 6th place will claim the wildcard title.

Right now the seeds would be:
1 Cowboys
2 Packers
3 Seahawks
4 Buccaneers
5 Giants
6 Vikings
1 and 2 are off week 1. Seahawks host the Vikings and the Bucs host the Giants.
Week 2: Dallas is home against the lowest seeded winner of the first games. So if Seattle and Tampa win, they would play Tampa. But if Seattle loses to the Vikings, the Cowboys would play them and the Packers would play Tampa.
Week 3: The highest seeded winner is home. So if Dallas would lose and Green Bay wins, the Packers host. If both lose, the Bucs or Seahawks would host if they are still alive. So after Dallas loses to Tampa and the Vikings beat Green Bay, the Buccaneers are home where they will win the NFC Championship and go to the Super Bowl to beat the Patriots.

The top two seeds from each conference BOTH get first round byes. However, if the top seed stays unbeaten, they will play both of their playoff games at home on the road to the Super Bowl.

And yes, after their bye week (when the Wild-Card Weekend takes place), the top two seeds will play a wild-card team in the Divisional Round. The number 1 seed will play the lower ranked team that made it to the divisionals, whilst the number 2 seed will play the other team.

Then of course, the winners of those two teams will meet in the Conference Championship game, with the winner moving on to play in the Super Bowl (against the winner of the other conference champion).

It's the tip of the iceberg as far as explanations go, but I hope that helps!!!!!!!!!!

heres how it works...the 4 division winners are seeded 1-4 based on overall record and a tiebreaking formula (see espn.com or nfl.com) the 2 wild cards are the teams with the two best records who did not win their divisions, again tiebreaking it used to determine the 5th and 6th seeds. the #3 team plays the #6 team (#3 gets a home game) and #4 plays #5 (#4 gets a home game)...after those games, the team with the worst seed will play AT dallas, and the team with the better seed will play at GB. for instance if the #6 and #5 teams win....dallas would get the #6 and gb would get the #4 and #5 teams win, dallas would get the #5 and gb would get the #4

Tampa Bay and Seattle have already clinched their divisions, so they will play the wild card teams in the first week of the playoffs. The wild card teams haven't been determined yet but they'll probably be the Giants and Vikings.

Look at this
http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/standings/playoffrace/bracket

Basically, there are 4 division winners and 2 WC teams. The top two division winners get a bye week, the 3rd and 4th best divisional winners each play a wild card team. The 3rd best divisional winner plays the lowest WC team, the 4th best divisional winner plays the top wild card team

well it depends on what happens the next two weeks. if Minnesota wins, they're in. If NYG wins, they're in. Washington and New Orleans still have a chance though if either of them lose.
