I am a Tax Accountant. Your question does not say if you want him to have the tax credit for his taxes or just that you want to donate to a charity he supports,.

1. If he is to get the tax credit the donation must be from him or acknowledged by the charity as from him if the amount is $250 or more in cash or value of an item. Remember if the value or the cash is $250 or more you must have a receipt.

2. If he is to get the tax credit and the donation will be under $250 in cash or value he must make the donation with his check or the item and get the receipt in his name.

3. If you want to honor him by donating in his name then include a note telling the charity that "this donation is to honor Johnny Jones" - You get the receipt and the donation is your tax deduction on schedule A
