Order of operations asks you to do within the brackets first, but since we do not know the value of 'a', we cannot work inside the brackets. We can expand, collect like terms and then simplify again however. Multiplication gets priority over addition, so do the multiplying first:
Multiply(expand) the elements inside the brackets by the 3:
(3 times (a) ) plus (3 times 2), minus ( 5 ) is what we do:
3a + 6 - 5
and collect like terms (simplify):
