Anti virus helps you by scanning the data so that there is no virus present.

Anti Spyware helps you by checking that there is no data transfer between your PC and Internet without your permission (this data transfer may mean that you are being monitored or your personal details like credit card info. etc are being sent automatically)

Spyware is where they are able to see what your working on (sorta) and get pop ups on your computers, but your comp is still usable.
Spyware programs can collect various types of personal information, but can also interfere with user control of the computer in other ways, such as installing additional software, redirecting Web browser activity, accessing websites blindly that will cause more harmful viruses, or diverting advertising revenue to a third party.

A virus can mess up your entire computer. Its an infection that is a whole lot harder to get rid of.
Virus: a software program capable of reproducing itself and usually capable of causing great harm to files or other programs on the same computer; "a true virus cannot spread to another computer without human assistance"

So which ever you want to defend against.

A computer virus is a piece of code that will attach to files, then spread from one computer to the next by sharing files (similar to the flu virus for us). Viruses do a range of things, like delete files, rename files, display popup messages on specific days of the year or just cause general mayhem.

Spyware are programs that run in the background and gather information about what you do (mainly on the Internet), this information is passed to websites for them to analyse..this is mainly used so they can target specific ads to you.

A computer virus generally does other (bad) things to your computer, however, it can also spy on what you're doing.

Spyware generally just wants to collect information from your computer.
