Ruthie O, that's funny. In Malaysia we call an elevator "lift" and apartments "flats" too! I guess it's a bit of the influence of the English that conquered Malaya. Cool!
We Chinese here speak English in a very "chinese" way. Hope you don't mind.
"Such a yellow mind!" - Referring to someone who is very lustful and stuff, "dirty mind" in western cultures.
"I smell gas that isn't worth any money" - Referring to someone farting very loudly or usually, very smelly.
"You want to be a banana kid?!" - Asian parents scolding their kids that are influenced by negative western cultures. And yes, they tell this in English.
"You want to be a fisherman?!" or "You're born by/in the sea, aren't you?" - Critisizing people who are extremely nosy. This is due to the fact that our way of saying "He is nosy" in OUR Chinese is, well don't laugh - "He likes to guard/know a lot about salty stuff/matters".
Oh, I remembered now, and do I have a good treat for YOU! In our multi-racial country we have developed a system of English-like words that all races can understand!
Read the "a" as "ah"(unless stated) as if you are being asked to open the mouth by the dentist.
Transverstite/cross-dresser/girlish males - "Ah gua" "bondan"
Nuts, bonkers - "sot sot."
Reversing ( the car) - "gostan" (Not "Go, Stan". But "Ghost'ah'n") Don't know what it means though, it's just stuck to me for 18 years of my life.
Requesting a doggy-bag - "tapau", "take-away"
Mobile phones/ Cell phones - "Handphone" (Read it the normal way.)
Photocopy - "Fotostat"/"Photostat" (Read: Photo state)
Eraser - "Rubber"
Instant noodles - "Maggi" (Read: Maggie)
Not understanding - "Blur blur" (Read: bler bler or bluh bluh)
Some kind of exclaimation - "Wah-seh!" "Walauweh!"
Another exclaimation, usually to say "Cool!" - "Syiok!"
Very common saying of "stamp of approval" - "Chop". Convenient. Isn't it?
"Lend me your pencil" - "Borrow me your pencil"
A white/westerner: Mat Salleh(In malay) or Guai lou(Ghost man in Cantonese, I think.)
And we usually add an "o!"/"oh!" in a sentence with exclaimation. Eg: Why the test is so hard o?

First, let me say that I didn't read your dissertation and there is a word in the dictionary called concise--you should look it up if you expect people to take you seriously. Second, America is in the middle. We are one of the poorest developed nations. Compared to other developed countries we have lax environmental protections and labor standards. The American worker is among the most overworked, underpaid, and under appreciated worker in the West, IF she/he can even get a job at this point. Compared to undeveloped countries I think that even the poorest Americans live quite well. But America is almost completely devoid of culture, and the food in America is freeze dried, vacuum sealed and loaded with preservatives and chemical additives. Hardly anything is fresh anymore. I live in an undeveloped country just for access to fresh, well prepared food.

Do you know why? The English use to make fun about the Irish people, as inferior to them!
