Hibernate is a great option to shutdown or standby. Selecting hibernate will shutdown and startup in 20 seconds or less. Unlike standby, it uses no electric power so it is a cost saver.
If you have a power failure in standby mode, it is just like a hard shut down. Not so in Hibernate mode.
Selecting Hibernate writes whatever is in memory at the time to the HDD so it is permanent until you bring out of hibernation.
It is recommended though to do a normal shutdown every week or so to allow for updating, etc.
I use hibernate and shut down all programs including my browser so they will release whatever memory they have hogged during last session.

Hibernate is more like sending your computer to sleep, so when u restart it will jump back to how exactly where u were before. This however requires a small amount of power to maintain it. Shutdown will perform a clean up so in the long run your better using shutdown

Use both if you are busy moving from one place to another and need to keep programs up and running without saving, set the laptop to hibernate when you close the lid. When you have time to save your work and shutdown, set the power switch to shutdown your laptop. Simple and eloquent, have your cake and eat it too.

Hibernate will shut everything down, but in a saved state, so when you power your computer back on, it will go right back to the way things were just like your screen saver or sleep mode. It's not necessarily for speed, but it's faster getting back to what your were working on from a powered-off state.

Hi. Hibernate stores you setting from the active session and allow for a faster boot. Better in my opinion if you shut down several times a day.

In my opinion, Shutdown is better coz it'll refresh your computer. Hibernate is just a pause. ^^

Shut down. Hibernate is like a mini-shut down except it uses some of your computers hard drive space to save what evers loaded on your computer. Shut down completely turns it off, and makes it happy. No things to hold.
But I always leave my computer on, 24/7, and it's fine.

I always use shutdown if I`m not going to be using the PC for a few hours. Save energy.
