The Sabres could have signed both stars during last season for a reasonable price. Regier, wouldn't negotiate, BUT why?

Now Vanek, as good as he is, is quite overpaid. I know this is old news, but watching the team play, it still bugs me!

The day after the playoffs ended, Chris Drury informed Larry Quinn that he would not be returning to Buffalo regardless of what they offered (Drury, Quinn, and Regier have all confirmed this in various interviews).

And if you believe Briere, he didn't receive a decent offer until June 28th, and by that time he was p.o'd at the team.

Chris Drury had already made his mind up to leave and had told Regier that he would not be returning.

Briere signed about 5 seconds after the free agency period opened. Regier may have waited too long but to be honest, I would not be surprised if there had been some tampering on the part of the Flyers. I doubt Briere would have read and accepted an offer that big so quickly.

It's well known that Martin Biron is a good friend of Briere's and may have influenced his decision prior to that date.

i am a sabres fan and buffalo has a rule to not negotiate any contracts during the season, this is the reason we have lost alot of players in the past including drury and briere, this is such a stupid rule and buffalo is going to lose Brian Campbell to a big contract if they don't change the rule by the end of the year

He really didn't think they were that important. He thinks the team is a bunch of interchangeable parts and they can just plug anyone in to anyone else's spot and they will be ok. As to Vanek, just about everyone agrees the Sabres were FOOLS to match the offer sheet.

Coulda shoulda woulda. I'm over it now. But hey, we have Vanek for seven years. He is overpaid now, but IMO he should be worth that towards the end of the contract

What does Regier have to do with the signing of Drury and Briere? He's just the coach.

Really? Where the hell have I been....?

^^ He is GM. Ruff is the coach. It is because he is a moron. Especially when he showed his hand saying he would match any offer for Vanek after he failed to keep the other two, Edmonton then said, fine, match this ridiculous contract, he was then forced to instead of looking like the fool he is.

because NO ONE wants to stay in buffalo. even vanek tried to get out by signing an offer sheet with EDMONTON! but buffalo matched the offer and he had to stay.

drury knew he was leaving. i remember watching the playoffs, buff vs nyr last year and the ranger fans were chanting something about signing drury.

briere was sure to leave after having his best season (he will ever have). he was also close to biron, who was very influential in getting briere to sign in philly.
