A contractor really messed up the installation of our shower and we refused to pay the labor. The owner of the company spoke with me and then dropped it. I'm concerned there could be a lien on my home and would like to take care of the situation now.

go the tax assessor's office in your city/town. they should have a list of all the liens against your property.

Call a title company and ask them to do an O & E (Ownership & Encumbrance report) on your property. It may cost you a few bucks, but it will show all of the liens on your property.

If the contractor did put a mechanics lien on your property, nothing will happen unless you sell or refinance the property, and I believe that in 1 year, it will drop off of the property if not cured. Ask the title company who does the O & E for you.

The contractor must give you legal notice of the lien, although they might be able to accomplish this without notice, it would be fraudulent. The County Clerk or County Recorder's office would have record. You should have your legal description handy before you contact the county office.

Any liens would be filed at the courthouse with county recorder, you can go there and ask.
