'Area 51' is a map reference for the US Air Force's Groom Lake facility. It is a research and development station for producing new aircraft, and possibly houses some captured Russian aircraft which have been studied for their innovations. Because of the nature of the military research going on there, the work is classified (you don't want anyone outside the 'need-to-know loop getting the information because then it could get to your enemies and thus render any advantage useless).

Among other things, the U-2, SR-71 and F-117 aircraft were developed there. Other projects that were unsuccessful have also undoubtedly been undertaken, but flight tests of new and unusual aircraft inevitably lead to reports of UFO sightings, because the average person seeing these things flying doesn't recognise them. In the early 90s there were many reports of black triangular alien craft in the skies over the US. Then the stealth planes were revealed to the public, and they were indeed black and triangular, and frankly unlike any conventional aircraft.

What Area 51 is mostly is a favoured location for conspiracy nuts to point at and claim there are aliens there because, of course, no-one who works there can talk about what goes on there (or at least might be expected to be dishonest or evasive about it), and no-one outside is allowed in to see. Conspiracy nuts are therefore safe in their assumptions because no-one can contradict them on any official level, and those that do can be accused of disinformation.

I think that airplane development has moved to another site. People don't see aircraft there like they used to. I was told by a lady who worked at area 51 that I would be bored if I found out what was going on there... I think its mainly computer warfare these days.

I always figured that is where the military test new aircraft, even top secret ones. That would explain lights that no one has ever seen, and alot of them happen at night, considering that's when they would like to make there flying weapons more efficient. Airports are always gonna deny what they see becuase they are given military orders too.
