the pump and the shaft from the pulley going into the pump had broke so that was obvious, then a few weeks later the steering went stiff again so i thought maybe it happened again so i took the pump out and it wasn't broken, so i thought maybe the new pump was faulty sent it back under warranty and fitted another one, the same thing today the steering has gone stiff any ideas please.

I know this sounds silly but when you refilled the system did you turn the steering from lock to lock a few times the bleed the system and you don't mention whether you are loosing and fluid.
Also could it be a possibility that a part of the shaft has got into the fluid lines and is causing a blockage or has got into the valves in the rack?

check the power steering fluild level,check any dirt had clogged the circulation,while fitting the pump,did u check whether the valve in the inlet line was there?

You dont bleed them, simply turn from lock to lock 2 or 3 times and check yhe levels. Sounds to me as if you iether have the wrong fluid in or the belt is a bit slack.

might be the alternator, some cars have a separate output for running the pump, if the current is too low the pump can fail to run, this happened on my Vauxhall

you are bleeding the system if you have air in the system it will cause this
