Playing Scrabble on the computer last night with the kids, made an unusual word by accident. We remember the definition but not the word! The word seemed a bit archaic, it means "mail that cannot be delivered". I assume they mean snail mail. Does anyone know what the word would be? Thanks!

I beleive the word you are searching for is "nixie". There are numerous online reverse dictionaries that can help when you have this problem, I use them all the time. The one I use most often is "One Look".

Nixie comes from the USPS, when they pronounce the acronym "NCSC" ( National Customer Support Center)

NIXIE

A piece of mail matter which cannot be delivered, either because no post office exists at the place to which is it addressed, or because there is no place of the name mentioned in the designated State, Territory, or the like.

This is arcaic, from around 1913 and has fallen into disuse. Nixie also means water sprite.
