Four years of college
Four years of Law School
Several years serving as a clerk for experience
And while those debts from schools start accumulating interest, you want them to work for free?

"is their lack of proffessional ethics among lawyers? "
hardly, many lawyers work long and hard for people. The ones we hear about are (unfortunitally) the over paid wackos who don't work very much on their own
"why dont lawyers fight public litigations free of cost ? "
Public Defenders get paid $0 by the defendants. They are hired by and paid for by the state. Others are often willing to work pro bone for a case. And other only want to recieve payment IF you win.
"are they not committed towards the growth of the society ? "
of course they are. They help shape the law by either arguing for or against certain types of law. Think of the civil rights movement for one.
"they should realise their values in society and rise above their level of equating every case in terms of money."
ok, then politicians, doctors, nurses, police, firemen, inspectors, constructionworkers and many more should stop being paid because "they should realise their values in society".
I think you shouldn't try and start a flame war here.

NOTHING is free.
they didn't spend all those years in law school and all that time studying for the BAR exam to just hand out their pricey services for free.
that'd be like saying "why don't corporations give back to the little man...the people who make their business and keep it running?!"
"why doesn't the government give people free health care, not try and screw it's own people over who ARE the country and suck all the money out of our pockets with unfair and sometimes high taxes?"
though it may be the right thing to do, theres the way things should be, and the way things are.
it's all about money money money money money!!!! True morals haven't been part of a society in hundreds of years.....that and with everything thats good, people would abuse it. You see how many people now-a-days are sue happy and clutter up the courts with ANYTHING they can just to make a dime off of it.

Why don't lawyers give up their time for free to do highly complex things that they spent years being trained to do...
We don't draft soldiers, firemen, police, paramedics, doctors, or plumbers, why do you think lawyers should work for free?
You have it right, they DO recognize their value to society, and expect to be compensated for it, rather that shoving that value out there for people that probably don't appreciate it.
Committed to growth of society is one thing, but at one's own personal expense is another.

Anything you get for free, is worth that much only. No tell me which fool works for free.
I dont believe their social ethics matches with their professional ethics. If a criminal confides in them as his lawyer, they have to defend him, not turn him over.
As they are business person they do have to get paid. My only complain is that they have to be paid even if the work was of poor quality.
