why is SF/SV the apparent centre of the tech universe ?
SF isn't the most populated area in the USA & other areas have highly educated people too ( new york, la, chicago, dc etc) so why SF ?
what is it that creates the entrepeneurial / "start up" culture ?

Well, there are a few books on this subject... Stanford University and UC Berkeley and other colleges are there and they are excellent. Stanford in particular is great at engineering and business. The area has many Japanese and other Asian companies. Hewlett-Packard started there. For a variety of reasons, HP, Intel, MicroDevices and many other companies got started here, and their success drew others in. Its a great area to live in, except for the traffic, and its success keeps drawing more business into the area.

P.S. Apple also started here. And there were many venture capitalists in the area. And California, especially in the 1945-1985 era, was seen as a mecca of growth and technology.

The nerd per capita ratio is highest there. That's because it's cloudy most of the time and the computer geeks can't stand in the sunlight. Same thing with Microsoft being outside Seattle.

No. There were already small companies that did military and some civilian early computer and machine controls in the 40-50s. Other companies came there because that is where the experience is.
