I am an American who prefers Christmas. But both holidays are popular hear. It truly depends on the company you work for in regards to how much time you get off. Mine gives me thur/fri/sat/sun for Thanksgiving and this year I am getting a 4 day weekend for Christmas and also for New Years however my sister has to work the holidays and has no days off on those weekends.

As you can probably see from earlier responses, many Americans enjoy Thanksgiving for its simpleness and lack of over-commercialization. Many families spend 1-3 days enjoying the time together, with the focus on the Thanksgiving dinner meal.
Christmas involves a few weeks off (for students, anyway) and a lot of commercialization. I'm a student, so I always like it because it provides a few weeks of relief from homework and the like. However, it's also nice to see all the Christmas lights, put on some festive tunes, and sit back with some apple cider in front of the fire.
So, Christmas is celebrated more, but when you spread that celebration over a month... it can wear on people.

For Thanksgiving, most people get Thanksgiving and Black Friday off.
For Christmas, most people get Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off.
Thanksgiving Day is all about autumn, pumpkins, corn, pilgrims, etc. but at the strike of midnight it is Black Friday and the Christmas season begins. Christmas trees and decorations go up, Christmas carols are on the stereo, and everyone starts shopping with hot cocoa. Christmas celebrations and parties occur throughout December so it is more of a month long celebration whereas Thanksgiving is only one day but it is more warm, wholesome, and quaint.

The working culture in America is sick. They don't nearly give enough time off to spend with family and rest.
That said, generally Christmas Day is a day off and Thanksgiving is a day off. Occasionally employers will give the Friday after Thanksgiving off (Black Friday) and Christmas Eve off.
Personally, I prefer Thanksgiving because its a simple holiday. You make a big fuss over a meal to be eaten with friends and family. No gifts, no expectations. Just quality time spent with those you love. Doesn't get any better than that.

Personally, I prefer Thanksgiving.
Christmas gets to be such a beating...
Decorations, ornaments and wrapping paper start arriving in the discount stores as early as August. By mid October, its a large, dedicated section of the store.
Its so easy to get caught up in the "who's giving what to whom" and overspend on gifts.
The stress and the headaches, and the weather is much colder, to boot.
Give me a giant meal with six different choices for dessert, and I don't even need a gift. That's why I prefer Thanksgiving.

Sadly, americans are more and more so turning christmas from a religious celebration, to a marketing frenzy. Thanksgiving is my favorite, fun, food, friends, family. It just doesnt get any better. My company doesnt shut down for any holiday, however they do pay us double time for working on a holliday. That all just depends on the company. Happy hollidays from the states.

I'm American and I prefer Christmas. But for the family aspect Thanksgiving is better because Christmas has become so comercial. It's sad because before Thanksgiving even happens, stores are stocked with Christmas decorations and gifts and they strat Christmas sales. =)
