Heathrow is about 15 miles west of the central area of London where most visitors want to go.

There are many transport links, all have good and bad points.

It's about 16 miles. There are various ways to get to central London. Taxi is, of course the most expensive. Quickest is the Heathrow Express train to Paddington which takes about 20 minutes and costs around £16. There is also a slower and cheaper train which stops a few stations on the way to Paddington. The cheapest option is the Underground (Tube) which takes about an hour but will take you further into the centre of London

Everyone has a different idea of the 'centre' of London depending on what you want to do. You may wish to choose your transport to link with connections to the area you really need to get to
Unless you are very rich and have lots of time the only reason to take a taxi would be lots of luggage or several in your party. Its not far but the traffic can be horrendous (it can take anything from 45 minutes in the dead of night to 2 hours plus). It certainly will be as soon as you hit the outskirts of London. You could try a taxi motorcycle (http://www.dhpmoto.com/Reports/PassengerBike/PassengerBike.htm) it avoids the traffic if you are dressed appropriately and have little luggage.

An alternative is
Heathrow Express is the most convenient (15mins) but Paddington may not be your idea of the centre of London and you will need to find transport from there by tube/taxi/bus so factor that in to cost and time.
If you are willing to spend an hour on the Underground (tube) then it can be the most cost effective and you can connect to other stations.
Alternative bus to Victoria Station is straightforward but will hit traffic problems just the same as a taxi.
Only a very brave person would hire a car. Parking and finding your way around the city one-way systems puts most people off.

If you plan to go by public transport get an Oyster card

It looks like by car the journey is 17.1 miles. It will be slightly less as the crow flies.

See the map link below for the full route.
