Fossett was reported missing on September 3, 2007 after the plane he was flying over the Nevada desert failed to return.Despite over a month of searches by the Civil Air Patrol and others, Fossett has not been located, and the search by CAP was called off on October 2, 2007. However, privately funded and directed search efforts continue. On November 26, 2007, Fossett's wife requested that Fossett be declared legally dead.

It's difficult for me to understand that in this age of GPS finders, GoogleEarth and other technologies that can virtually find a needle in a haystack from hundreds of miles above the Earth, that we've been unable to locate Fossett or the wreckage of his plane.
It's more plausible for me to believe that:
a. Fossett decided to run away from everything, and is happily living on some deserted South Seas island, content to be away from the pressures of family, business and the media;
b) The government is somehow involved in Fossett's 'disappearance', perhaps having spirited him away to Area 51 where he is busily engaged in the inspection of a new extraterrestrial space craft captured by the feds and now under extensive scrutinization;
c) Fossett never took off in any plane, and is securely hidden away for purposes of privacy or medical attention.
Certainly, with the technologies available today, we should be able to find Fossett's body. -RKO- 12/20/07

He has not been found and his wife has asked the courts to declare him as being dead so she can collect the life insurance.

I think he was shot down above Area 51, and the government is covering it up.

She has applied for him to be stated as dead now, I did hear that much, but not been following it much.
