I am moving to Sydney in Jan and am looking at apartments, I know that places like Glebe are quite nice and quiet, but still near enough to the city centre. I have found quite a few reasonably priced places in Ultimo - does anyone know if this is a decent place to live?

Ultimo is fine but there are a few major roads there. You really don't want to be on one of those with traffic noise all day and night. The University of Technology is in Ultimo as is Sydney TAFE and the ABC centre. There are plenty of students and interesting pubs and shops. Paddys Market, Haymarket and Chinatown are close by and you can walk to Central Station in a few minutes.

Get a flat off the main roads and you will be fine but if you are on Broadway or Harris St, invest in ear plugs.

I lived in Broadway on Broadway Road, between Glebe and Ultimo. Ultimo, as the others have mentioned, is a great place for students and overseas visitors. You can walk to anywhere in the CBD - 20 minutes walk will get you to the David Jones / Myers department stores in the centre of town, and 5-10 minutes walk to Chinatown. Although the buses will pass in peak hour every minute or so, it's often quicker (also cheaper, and healthier!) to walk. The noise didn't bother me, even though for most of my life I've lived in hilly suburbia. The 'hum' of traffic was quite soothing after a while!

Ultimo and that area is great because it's so convenient and close to everything and everything. No matter what time you start work or end up finishing your night, transport will never be a problem. Generally speaking, it's safe because it's so populated, but that's also it's problem (ie, higher chances of crime occuring because of a larger population and its proximity to town).

Personally, I would recommend living in Glebe. Buses are obviously still very frequent but it has more of a 'community' feel, with great restaurants and cafes along Glebe Point Road. Interesting terraces and homes, parks, and a walkway along the river. Plus, it's only an extra half hour walk to the CBD, as you walk past all the cars stuck in traffic. The whole area is great, but personally, Glebe for me would have offered all the benefits of living in an inner-city area, but with the benefits of a suburb.

its very close to the city, and has some really nice loft arpartments. Its a tad more pricey than Glebe, and Ultimo doesnt have cafes and the like. Its more tourist orientated.
Depends on what type of lifestyle you want really?
A charming terrace house, or a brand new arpartment?
cafes or darling harbour?
Google darling harbour, its nice enough, and bring Utimo closer to town. Just vey touristy.
Theres Newtown for the alternative types, and paddington for the nightlife, and shpping. If you are looking at Ultimo, anywhere in the city is a walk away.
G'luck, its a great place to live.(sydney)
Cheers.

If you don't mind the noise, Ultimo is fantastic as it is very close to the City Centre. You also have Central Station reasonably close (depending on what part of Ultimo you have found an apartment) and many bus stops which means you will have easy access to public transport.

As mentioned, it may get quite noisy and is close to many main roads. However, if you were after a "pretty" or "scenic" place to live, then Ultimo is not for you. Don't expect anything ritzy.

Yes it is good, near the city and Glebe and also Darling Harbour. I think some of the properties will be a bit older a bit like Glebe also quite a lot of students.

In Sydney you are able to enjoy the normal beauty. From unspoilt beaches to community gardens and, obviously, the sparkling harbour, Sydney is really a city worth visited and with hotelbye you could have the opportunity to do that. The Sydney Harbour Bridge or "Coathanger," since the people call it is one of many areas you shouldn't skip in your trip here. This place was the city's best-known landmark just before construction of the Opera House. Reinforced by substantial dual piers at each conclusion, it had been built-in 1932 and stays the world's greatest metal arch connection, connecting the harbour's north and south shores in one single contour climbing 134 metros above the water. Along its period run two railway lines and nine counters for path traffic, the path of which can be varied according to traffic flow. Also, to understand about the fascinating history of the bridge's construction you are able to go to the museum in the south-eastern pier.

ultimo is fine, not a huge difference between that and glebe, glebe seems more fashionable and ultimo more practical.
