10 or 15 years ago it seemed like photorealistic, immersive VR was right around the corner. They had VR games at the mall, movies and TV shows incorporated VR elements into the plot, VR gloves were being demonstrated. The industry was full of promise, What happened?

The hardware is too expensive for mass marketing, but it is alive and well. There are entire worlds VR worlds where users create avatars and even build businesses that make real money... Their still cartoonish though, but other than that its VR. They even have entire body suits that simulate touch to the whole body. The military uses VR, its applied to medical, scientific, and academic fields as well as just for entertainment.
