In 1999, Kenneth Miller, a biologist at Brown University wrote about the self-sufficiency of nature. Is the self-sufficiency of nature a scientific question or has Miller crossed the border into philosophy? Is it possible to show self sufficiency by scientific observations? Miller defends evolution yet maintains that there is a God (Miller states that he is Catholic).

Self sufficiency of nature in effect says that God doesn't need to interfere with nature for nature to function.

All of this is like a dog trying to understand an electrical sub-station by sniffing it, in my opinion - all we can say is that so far, what we have observed and can reasonably infer from artifacts, suggests that nature so far has produced an ongoing re-stocking of plants and animals here on Earth but has produced some non-re-stocking changes as well which may or may not suddenly have catastrophic altering effects at some time in the future. Also, new and unanticipated events could appear at any time with unknown consequences. And, we have to add, that is how it appears to us, limited as we may well be, by our lowly three-dimensional take on things, and assuming we not Brains in a Vat.

Let us now hook thumbs in suspenders and begin to bray about what we think God may be.

God created nature to be self-sufficient,and it was until man and his devices (science) upset that natural order.Everything in the natural world is dependent upon something else.Once you upset that natural order you compromise the self-sufficiency of all of it.It's the domino effect. That's why our planet is so damned messed up.Mankind's greed in general continues to affect our environment with ever increasing catastrophic events. It's mankind's total disregard for God's natural order that has put us where we are today. And as Sonny & Cher sang: "And the beat goes on."

Pour la Paix. is very right with what he said about nature out surviving the humanity we have right now... but to ask if its a scientific question or.. Hmm, EVERYTHING can have a scientific label.. (THEORY.. PROVEN), but the Philosophy truly is.. -smiles-

Here.. Science.. is the hard lined, no give, no frills, MAN approach to nature.. and Philosophy is.. Art, soft delicate.. and the Female approach to nature..

I believe it is scientific. All of nature is scientific and we use it for philosophical debates and discussions. Nature is the most used medium in mankind for a huge variety of reasons. Health, machinery, fire, water, food, sailing, the nature of flight itself is used by us.
Philosophy is only one thing that is used with nature in mind.
God however created the science. The big bang didn't just happen and come out of nothing. Catholic or protestant denomination is irrelevant.
The faith we have in what God has wrought transcends denominations and goes to the heart of all the faithful.

The reason we are not self-sufficient is that we need God.
