BUTTERLESS, EGGLESS, MILKLESS CAKE 2 c. brown sugar 2 c. raisins 2 c. boiling water 3/4 c. shortening 2 tsp. cinnamon 3 1/2 c. flour 2 tsp. nutmeg 2 tsp. ground cloves Pinch of salt 2 tsp. baking soda in 1/2 c. water 1 c. nuts, chopped Mix brown sugar, raisins, water, shortening, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and pinch of salt into a large saucepan. Cook on medium high heat for 5 minutes, cool briefly. Add baking soda and water combination to hot mixture. Cool. Add flour and nuts. Beat well. This makes a stiff batter. Pour into 2 greased loaf pans. Bake slowly in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour.
