Is it true or is it just an old wives tale?

I didn't see the programme on GMTV about sprouts. I wished I had seen it then I would not be asking this question. Thanks.

It's an old wives tale. There was a guy on GMTV yesterday morning telling you all about sprouts.

My Dad always grows them and would never pick them until after the first frost, maybe an old gardeners tale!

Perfectly true, frost gives the sprouts a "nutty" taste.

I was always told they were better after a frost, but since I've been growing my own I've not found much difference.

Don't know, but one thing I can tell you is that they taste much better fresh. By the time they reach the supermarket shelves their flavour has changed, and not for the better. On Christmas day ours will be picked just before they're cooked.

That's bunk. I have had them from my garden before frost, and after and, they taste the same. My mother in law won't eat an apple until after a frost.

I think so, so do parsnips as the starch starts to turn to sugar which caramelises when you cook them.
