I suggest signing on as offline you can still chat to others while you are appear as offiline, this is the only way I can see of avoiding them without letting them know.
Or get another account (thats what I did) and tell people thats how to contact you now.

Yes just right click on the contacts name and scroll down ro block contact and click

click on them with the right button...then choose to delete contact...then in the menu that pops up choose to also block the contact...thats the only way I know how to block someone....they wont show in your contacts if you block them, but the will show on your blocked user list (in the preferences somewhere)

If you block someone a red block mark will always show. If there wasn't, how would you know that you blocked them? (rhetorical question)

The red *Blocked* will always show....
I don't think there's any way to do it without that Icon...sorry!

Right click on their name and block.
Ohh sorry - that will still show as blocked on your screen though. Contact can't tell though.
