There are times it is correct. Why would we hurt the feelings of the people we know?

There are also times we must stand up for what is right.

This is a moral dilemma that all adults face. Sometimes not speaking up and telling all that you know may be the right choice. It is called discretion.

Imagine having this conversation with a neighbor of yours. "By the way, Robert, while I was taking my daily walk in the park the other day I saw your daughter the cheerleader servicing the captain of the football team." The revelation of truth may not serve any good purpose in this instance. It might cause embarrassment, shame, and pain to your neighbor and his family.

As another example: Assume that you have been married for many years. One day your spouse asks you if they look old. Objectively they will be old. They will have wrinkles, and grey hair, and sagging. They will not be as nimble, or flexible, or have the stamina of youth. But should you say so? (I truthfully say that while we have known each other for all this time she is still beautiful to me. Just as she was the first time we met. In her eyes I still see the young girl I fell in love with all those years ago.)

Having made a case for restraint, I am compelled to say that telling a lie by omission-failing to tell truth-is just as morally wrong as fabricating falsehoods.

I take into account the motivation of the person who is prevaricating. Is the lie committed to harm another? Or is it done to shield a friend?

Whether it turns out to be a right choice or not, depends upon the person and the situation. However, the appropriateness of our keeping quiet gets known only after wards and by then it's too late, if our choice was wrong. This is one of those dilemmas of human relationship and only experience can help us .
