if the whole thing comes out at once, then it can be as big as a golf ball but very stringy like snot/egg whites. Mostly though it will come out in a thin stringy thing that is really hard to wipe away at first. It'll take you a bit to get it all off you or your knickers.

Actually - your "mucous plug" isn't a mucous "plug" at all.

When you are pregnant - your cervix begins to develop mucous. This keeps a "seal" to reduce infections. When your cervix begin to dilate, that mucous can't "hang on" anymore to the opening cervix, so it falls out. That mucous has been dubbed "the mucous plug". This is also how it became thought that the loss of that mucous meant you are in labor. However, it doesn't - it just means your cervix is more open than what it was before or more thinned out than it was before.

But, the truth is - whether that mucous is there or not - your cervix will make more. Some people make more mucous than others. Some people loose a small plug - the size of a nickel - others put out cups and cups of mucous. It is totally different with everyone.

its not really got a size. so just look for a pinkish or poss brown discharge. if it is it then contractions will soon be on there way. either way if you think you lost it call your midwife as you still are in theroy "pre term" so they'll give you a check over. good luck
