I think that what keeps us going and what is the purpose to life are usually two different things.

Purpose to life by the definition of the word "purpose" has no meaning unless we assume God as per this atheist philosopher:

“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell

So if we reject God, we also reject purpose and consequently meaning and worth. But we couldn't stand to live without worth so we invent "reasons for living" and then attach great importance to our invention and try to think of it as our reason for existence. It is an exercise in self deception.

Only if God exists can there be real purpose. I think God put our need for purpose into our human nature to point us to seek Him. So seeking our Creator is our purpose.

The mind is a very versatile tool. Just as a claw hammer can extract nails as well as put them into walls, so an imagination can be used to see through deception - as well as to create it. Usually, though, we know what we are doing with a hammer. But occasionally, we assume one process is taking place inside our head only to realise, belatedly, that it was actually another. There is some doubt about what you are seeing and thinking. Companions are surprised by some of the conclusions you appear to be reaching. Are they right - or are you? It's a bit of both - but you are not as wrong as you fear. You can reach for bigger and better things now

Authors such as Mark Prophet, "Climb the Highest Mountain," Ann Ree Colton, "Men in White Apparel," and O. M. Aivanhov, "Man, Master of His Destiny."

"The Reincarnation of Edgar Cayce," Free and Wilcock, http://www.divinecosmos.com "Life before Life," Jim Tucker, M.D., "Answers," Mother Meera, and "Expecting Adam," Martha Beck, are also good.

A worthwhile investment of time per the public library and interlibrary loan, as these authors give good answers.
