You know on some websites, when you are entering your user ID and password details and the website then shows you a string of jumbled up letters and numbers (like HWB5Y7 or something) - in most cases they look all messy - what is this for and why is is used? Thanks in advance!

It checks to see if you are human. So far no program can do that (understand the symbols in the box). What really gets me mad tho is .... when I fail it more than one time!
-This does help well in preventing the "bots" and their ads. If you ever been in a Yahoo chat room before the verification process, you'd know what I meant.

thats CAPTCHA. it's use to prevent spam and make sure the one entering information is a real human because there are "robots" in the net that automatically input data on forms but they cant read this characters. in short..its an additional security to your site

Captcha is the primary supplier of that technology. It is used to prevent computerized robots from spamming or automatically entering information in the protected areas.

its called a CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) and it's so programs can't go through the authorization process over and over creating fake accounts and spam.
