When did it start? I need a good answer because even though I know the meaning yet I don't know its origin. Be objective and spiritual to answer and to learn. Christmas is about caring and sharing not just giving and receiving. Christmas is the only holly-day which everyone celebrates. Merry Christmas and 'happy 'Birth'-day' to the Saviour of the world.

In addition to the story of the Birth of Jesus Christ in the Bible, here is a good article of the history of Christmas: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03724b.htm

With love in Christ.

How Did Christmas Come About

Since ancient times christmas (not known like that back then) was a seasonal celebration. We're talking about before christianity came along (not that I'm against it I must clarify that)
The birth (or rebirth) of the God (the sun god to say it like that).
In autumn and winter nights grow longer therefore the "god" was not alive but waiting to be reborn. Since Dec 21st is the winter solstice it was considered as the birth of the sun again (or god).
A time for hopes and blessings since people hoped for spring, green fields, day light and time to work the fields. Food and warmness.
And it did have spiritual and divine meaning to people as well based in their needs and life style at that time.
In the end it's a night of magic, hopes and celebration for those who have the luck and grace of being healthy and in the company of their loved ones.

the holiday Christmas started well before the birth of Christ. even the biblical reference to christ birth makes it highly unlikely it was in December.

"the Shepards were in the fields watching their flocks??" you watch your flocks at night in the spring when new babies are born. the scent of placenta attract predator animals the mothers weak from giving birth and new borns that cant walk or run very well make for easy kills

about 2500 BC the Norris and Egyptians both celebrated on Dec 25... also the time in the winter solstice when the sun begins to rise in the high noon sky. the sun rising meant winter was half over and spring was coming. both cultures were sun worshippers.

If you get a chance try to watch ..Christmas Unwrapped on the history channel. it is documentary on the history of how and why we celebrate Christmas. its a bit dry but interesting to see the history of how Christmas evolved from a Mardi Gras like celebration how it was adopted and became the center of the Christian calender

Well, Christmas came about long time ago when a angel came to Mary the most humble person that God knew at that time and told her," Do not be afraid, for I come God.You will be baring a child and you shall call him Jesus." The part that scared her the most was the fact that she was engage to Joseph and that he would leave her if he found out that she Pregnant.

Here's a really good piece about Christmas from Wikipedia. It's not particularly spiritual, but it does give some very interesting info.
