In Mozart's sonatas it's called K454 or some other 3 numbers. Could anyone tell me what K and the numbers mean???

K stands for Köchel, who was the man who catalogued Mozart's works. More info can be found here....

Kochel catalogued all Mozart's works. he appears never to have given them opus numbers. Some works have Kochel Anhang numbers, or supplementary numbers, having been added later. The Flute and Harp Concerto is a good example. Mozart's works are not alone in being catalogued other than by opus numbers. J.S.Bach's use the BWV or Bach Werke Verein numbers, Schuberts increasingly D or Deutsche numbers. Liszr, confusingly, has two sets 'S' and 'R' numbers. I'm not sure what those letters stand for, but you will often find that a particular work is given both. Pulling a CD at random from by shelves I find that his transcription of Sant Saen's Dance Macabre is shown as S555/R240.

I'll just add my 2 cents worth(only for the 2-points). Ditto for the first three responders.

And thank God for Herr Kochels wisdom, knowledge and effort; otherwise the at least approximate order of composition by the great Mozart's works, would probably have never been known.

This is as much as I know. Someone organized all of Mozarts sonatas and numbered them. Kochel was the guy's name.

I'll give another example: Bartok.
1. op. - it's the way Bartok notated on some of his works (the works he considered be major works);
2. DD - it's the catalog number for Bartok's works, made by Denijs Dille;
3. sz. - it's the catalog number made by András Szollosy.
E.g. "String Quartet No. 1, Op. 7 (Bartok's classification), Sz 40 (Szollosy's classification)"
