It is necessary to learn history for two reasons: One is that history repeats itself and humankind has evolved by not only learning from their own mistakes, but of others through history. The second reason is to promote national pride. If you really want to make this fun, research REAL history in the library and you will notice that your high school history book literally lies to you and most history teachers don't even know this. Your textbook never admits wrongdoing by America (or it overshadows it to be not a big deal) I suggest reading "The lies my teacher told me"... I can't remember the author off hand. Challenge your teacher's claims citing your sources and there is nothing they can do about it! Just do it in a organized, intelligent, mature way that can not be construed as disrespect. This is guaranteed to make history much more fun for you! Geography, on the other hand, is a science and should be treated as such. It is no more, no less important than biology, astronomy, physics, chemistry, etc.

Even though it is really quite boring to study history for someone who doesn't love the subject because of all the readings and memorizations, I guess it is still necessary to study it because of course we need to learn and fully understand the things that happened in the past because they have a connection with what is happening today. In a way, they still affect the people. If studying history and geography is a prerequisite for every student, a student who is more interested in the sciences (physics, chemistry...) doesn't have any choice but to study it. After all, you wouldn't know there will come a time that it will benefit you. They say history repeats itself. And if the problems that happened in the past occurred again, at least the people will already have an idea on how to solve it.

Because as an educated person you need to have some understanding of how the world works, not just of those areas you personally find fascinating. Everyone should know something about the past which led to where we are now, and about the rest of the world, just as everyone should know something about science in order to be able to navigate our lives in the 21st century. I don't think you should have, for example, to take four college courses on one of these subjects, but it isn't asking a lot to make you take these things until class 10.

History helps us understand the future. If more people were familiar with history, maybe we would not be in Iraq. Geography is kinda if a sub-course of history, but a well rounded student performs better in all classes. History is related to political science is related to logic is related to philosophy is related to etc...

Good Luck.

One needs to know where one has been in order to know where one is going, (geography).

We study the past in order that we don't repeat it, (history)
