What you eat is a matter of family tradition. You consider vegetarian or non-vegetarian food as good or bad, according to your food habits. There is no point in passing judgement in such matters.

There lacto vegetarians, there are ovo vegetarians, and vegans.
Buddhist vegetarians, Jain Vegetarians.

The idea is to do least harm. Vegetables are plant, they too have life of a kind, then there are Fungi, then virus, bacteria, some other worms and caterpillars, Bees, and birds, fish, rodents, mammals, apes, and Human. Take your pick, if we live we do harm. So it is not like I am better than you. Choose where you want to stop.
Getting milk does not kill the cow or goat. So it is considered to do less harm. Secondly it does not have Rajasic guna associated with Meat.

The main reason why we should eat right food is to keep our brain healthy. The functions of the brain are affected by the kind of food we eat. According to Sanathana Dharma, there is nothing wrong in drinking cow milk. It provides good nutrition and is indispensible in human growth.

Milk is considered as veg item and all milk products are also veg as well.
A child is fed with breast milk of mother.It's a veg item.
