There cannot be partial damage to a RAM, only if it is working good pc will boot. If not you would get beep sounds from the CPU/cabinet.
On "My Computer" icon, right click & select Properties. The "General" tab will have the information.
Eg: 512 MB of RAM.
It is only a Sum memory/RAM installed, you would not have the infomation as to how many slots have been occupied.

There are applications like Everest Home Edition and CPU-Z which you let you test all your hardware components.
For your case, any of these two will do, although Everest Home Edition has more comprehensive RAM tests.
Other tools like RAM boosters and RAM defragmenters are available in droves on the internet. A little Googling and you'll be good to go.

The motherboard would desire to be ready to coping with that RAM. some motherboards require matched pairs of RAM. some require all of it to be an identical, some do no longer, it relies upon on the MB. examine the specs on IBM's internet site. If the workstation worked till now, then attempt with merely the 1GB RAM in the slot the 256MB became into in. GL
