The bike is not stolen I bought it on the condition that the title was lost. I assume it still is lost, just no one filed the proper paper work. Which leaves me trying to find who the idiot was that sold the bike with an active title and told the purchaser that there wasn't one.

I called the police and when I bought it and had them run the vin#. They told me they can't help me anymore either.

I'm in Massachusetts and the title will never be deemed inactive. They look at it as a property deed.

So I need to find the owner in 2001. This is the only way. So my question is does anyone know a way to find a non 17 digit vin# history.

There has to be some procedure for getting title to a vehicle when the papers (and the owner) are missing. Ask the dmv what it is. Maybe you need to write a letter, and have them forward it for you if they won't let you have the address.

A friend of mine did that for a motorcycle that had been left behind by a previous tenant. The motor vehicle registration critters gave him the address they had on file for the owner. My friend sent a registered letter to that address, stating that he had the bike, and did they want to sell it or pick it up or whatever. When the letter was returned, "addressee unknown", he presented that to the registration office, and they transferred the title to him.

In Missouri, you have to deal with the State Highway Patrol, not the local police or sheriff. They'll run the numbers to see if it's stolen, hopefully you have some proof of how you acquired it (bill of sale, notarized statement from the previous owner, etc). If everything is kosher, they'll assign it a new VIN (frame) number and give you a metal ID # tag that has to be affixed to the frame. You can then title it in your name.

Check with your nearest State Police, Highway Patrol or whatever the state law enforcement agency is and talk to them. Oh, putting the vin number on here isn't that big of a deal. No one is going to be able to claim you have their bike without them having proof that they currently own it. In other words, they will of had to already have it titled in their name. If they do and it is stolen and want it back, then you just did them a big favor by fixing it up.

A friend of mine bought a chopped Sportster once but the previous owner never came up with the title. It wasn't stolen or anything, so he and his friends got together, they made up receipts for the frame, engine, fork, etc like it was pieced together, took it to the Highway Partol office and in a couple of weeks, he was fixed up.

In Pennsylvania, the DMV doesn't keep inactive titles for longer then 5 years. Don't wast your time trying to find the old one.
Take the VIN # & apply for a reconstructed title.

You should be able to do a title search. IF there's the possibility of the owner returning and wanting the motorcycle back there's nothing you can do about it. Try running it thru carfax. Here's the link:http://www.carfax.com/

all you have to do is post it in the newspaper, not the vin idiot now someone can report it stolen if they do the same thin gim fixin to tell u to do, but put it in the paper if noone replys within 3 months, maybe shorter, not sure, you can go get a title and it's yours, you have to go to the police station too and make sure noone has reported it..thats what my uncle does with cars that he restores or junks.

Why did u restore it without holding the title. How do you know the person who sold it to you didn't steal it?
