w ² - 3w - 18 = 0 (Quadratic)

∆ = 9 + 72 = 81 =>√ ∆ = 9

w = (3 ± 9)/2

w ' = 6; w " = - 3

w ² - 3w - 18 = (w - 6)(w + 3)

w² - 18 - 3w .......... 1st put in order
w² - 3w - 18 .......... now look for factors of 18 that subtract to make 3, say 6 and 3
(w - 6)(w + 3)
and finally check multiply to make sure your signs are right.

= w^2-6w+3w-18
=w(w-6) 3(w-6)
=(w+3)(w-6)
=> w=-3, 6
