i have a v6 shogun just had this problem

some times the truck starts great on the button, then it would just click loud and very fast, (being manual we shoved it off)

it was the starter motor that had gone.

replaced it about 6 weeks ago and the truck as been spot on ever since.

I had same problem this time last year. I changed the starter but it still did it sometimes, turned out that the start of the cold weather was the cause of my batteries running flat. I was also told that both batteries are used for starting. not one for starting and one for tow bar electrics as i thought.
Best to have your starter and battery tested at a garage, they only charge a couple of quid if at all.

The clicking noise is a sign that there is insufficient power at the starter motor to spin it. As with kitty's, it could be the starter motor itself but first try the cheaper option of cleaning all the wiring contacts on battery, starter solenoid and starter itself. Any voltage drop at any of these connections makes starting worse or impossible. Remove each one and clean contacts with a fine wire brush then remake the connections. Remember not to short a live wire to earth as you work though, you get fireworks then.

id say the clicking noise is a sign that your battery's are gone, but you said you tried jump starting, maybe you still did not have enough power, cheek terminals on starter if not buy two new

Try cleaning off the terminals and tighten them firmly, a bad earth is one of the most common cause of problems.
Give them a light coat of vaseline or grease.
Good luck!
