Because it's so many positions in the NFL it's hard to decide. But I think the best player would have to be somebody who knows how to win and play when the game is on the line. I'll have to say that one is Joe Montana. The 4 Superbowl rings says enough.

I never saw this person play, but I would have to say Chuck Bednarik. He was a lnebacker and center. The last of the two-way players. College and Pro Football Hall of Famer. And he has an award named after him for the Best Defensive Player.

i know i am going with the popular answer but yes it has to be barry sanders only him and curtis martin have had 10 straight seasons to start out with a 1,000 yds or more he is oneof 5 to rush for over 2,000 yds and he holds the record for most carries for negative yards the man had no help not a great offensive line like emmitt smith can say he can give about 12,000 of his yards to larry allen he opened up monsterous holes john madden could have rushed for 1,000 yds with that line i know that is irrelevent but i cant stand emmitt anyway barry had legs like tree trunks visionlike an eagle and as sure footed as a mountain goat hes the best he quit in his prime he would blowed every stat out of the water the end

this really is a question that needs to be defined. its like asking who the prettiest girl ever and why. each person will have their choice and it would be correct for that particular person's values. so whatever someone says is correct in their eyes. does this take in consideration all aspects life? or just on field exploits? just because a player has more talent and is more skilled doesn't always translate to being the best player. take for instance Tom Brady. he was not highly rated coming out of college, but having Drew Bledsoe going down with injury, he was given his chance and the planets alligned and the rest is a future TV mini-series. rethink your question.

Like someone already stated there are too many correct answers.
But on a frustrating note it will unfortunately alway be back in the day players. When realistically the players coming out now are faster, stronger, better trained, clean diet, non smoking and drinking. but hey, what do I know.

Since this question is pretty subjective, I will give you my favorite in history.
Art Monk. The most hall of fame deserving receiver outside of Jerry Rice, yet he isn't in. If you look at every single major receiving category, he is in the top 5. He did this with no Joe Montana, No Tom Brady, No Joe Nameth etc. He did it with Doug Williams and Mark Rypian I know there were several others but they were the first to come to mind.
I give Jerry Rice his props. Monk was my favorite best player.

Jim Thorpe. He had a fantastic career, and he had the most effect on the league of any player ever, hands down. He was an established athlete before he played in the league, and if he had never joined the NFL, it probably would never have become a major league; it would have died like the USFL, XFL, and so many others.

I'll take Jim Brown on offense and Lawrence Taylor on defense. They dominated the game whenever they were on the field.
The problem, of course, is that positions require different skills. Jerry Rice probably is the best receiver that ever lived, for example. And you can look at many others - John Hannah, Joe Montana, Reggie White, Dick Butkus.
