There are pros and cons about considering race for college admissions. It allows children of historically underprivileged backgrounds held down due to racism, to seek a better quality of education and life. However, there's a downside to this because there is now a factor of reverse discrimination that not only affects college admissions, but also scholarships. Reverse discrimination involves students (considered to have a better quality of life based on race) that might lose their chance at admissions, even if they seem more qualified. As you can see, due to this their chance at success may be limited and might hold them back from a good quality education and life.
I personally feel that race shouldn't be considered, but the student's academic and non-academic achievements should.

Race should matter in recruiting and generation of applications for each class.

Then, each individual student should be evaluated as an individual during admissions to put together a strong class that is diverse in many ways - not just skin color.

Yes & No.

Colleges should not be admitting unqualified students. But that doesn't mean that if you have two qualified students you should automatically pick the one with the higher grades and SAT scores.

A school like Harvard or Stanford rejects over 80% of the qualified students that apply. That means that they have a large group of qualified students to choose from -- and can put together a diverse group.

Suppose they have a choice between a black student from a small town in South Carolina who has a 3.7 GPA and a 2100 SAT and a white student with a 3.9 GPA and a 2150 SAT from Westchester County NY. On paper, the white kid looks better. But both are qualified. Harvard already has dozens of white admits from Westchester -- but very few black admits from South Carolina. Choosing the black student may well be the better overall choice.

SHould a black kid get into Harvard just because he is black? No! Should it be considered? Yes!

And don't feel too sorry for that white kid from Westchester. He will get into Cornell or NYU.

Race matters, whether it "should" or not. When people try not to make it an issue, they make it an issue by excluding people in lots of subtle ways. Better to acknowledge that it matters and address it.
